After retirement

1999

When Ron had the chance to retire at 60 we discussed it and said Yes, - go for it. He said that he wanted us to spend the first ten years enjoying ourselves. Do what we wanted to, go where we wanted to, and when we wanted to. So that is just what we did. We decided to move back to our roots in Northamptonshire. We saw a new development of houses and Ron said Let's have a look. We chose our plot, after Ron worked out which way round the sun would fall (by holding his arm in the air and pretending to be a sundial), and we watched our house being built, in summer of 1999. It was ready to move into before Ron had finished working so I moved in and Ron stayed in our small caravan at Silchester. He came up to the house every week but it was always a surprise which day he would appear. That gave me time to unpack the boxes and settle in before he moved in properly, 2 months later. One of the gifts that he received on his retirement was Binoculars. So he spent the first two or three months going from front to back of the house watching the builders as they built more houses round us. Not a peeping Tom, but a Ron peeping out! So that took care of the first winter. We then bought a new caravan in January 2000, and had to change to a more powerful car to tow it. We tried it out. by spending a week near Bath in snow and ice and loved it. After that the neighbours called us the people who are never there! We could just hitch up and go. - and we did.
