Ron joined the R.A.F. in 1958. He had a choice of either working as a Cook or a Fireman. He chose the Fire Service. He did his initial training at Cardington, then a driving course at Wilmslow. and lastly a fire training course at Sutton on Hull. His first posting was an overseas one to Malta. We said our goodbyes and off he went, in February 1959, promising to write every day. A letter at the beginning of August suggested that we should get married on my birthday in September. We had become engaged the previous year. So I started making plans., Ron came home from Malta on the last day of August and we were married on 12th September 1959. Two weeks later and he was back in Malta. I joined him there the following January and we had an 18 month honeymoon on our island in the sun. Our first child Andrew was born in December. We returned to England in September 1961.
